The body’s ability to heal itself depends on a healthy nervous system. Events such as auto accidents, sports injuries, and repetitive stress to the back can hinder the body’s natural ability to adapt. The joints of the spine “lock up” when these events happen, limiting range of motion. Spinal joint restriction and/or misalignment irritates and puts more pressure on the spinal nerve, which can show up as back pain or neck pain.
So how can this problem be solved? One of the best natural, holistic treatments for neck and back pain can be achieved by using the services of a chiropractor. Chiropractors are specially trained in the evaluation and treatment of spinal conditions, which is why they are very popular with back and pain sufferers for fast and effective care. More and more doctors are working closely with chiropractors to help treat their patients who are suffering from long and short term back and neck pain.
Going to a chiropractor’s office for the first time can be confusing or a little intimidating, especially if you don’t know what will happen during your appointment. Not to worry. At Injury Clinic of Dallas, our staff will take care of you every step of the way.
One of the types of treatment you may receive at your appointment is a chiropractic adjustment. During your treatment, your chiropractor may stretch out some areas that are tender or apply light pressure to help with any muscle spasms or other tenderness. Following this, he or she will ask you to take a deep breath before performing the adjustment on you. Also known as a spinal adjustment or spinal manipulation, this is a procedure where the chiropractor uses their hands (sometimes a small instrument) to apply a controlled, sudden force to the spinal joint. The purpose of this is to correct your spinal structural alignment and improve your body’s physical function. If necessary, your doctor may recommend X-rays or diagnostic tests to receive further information about your spine and other conditions you may have.
There are times in which an adjustment in a particular area may be performed more than once during your session to make sure the adjustment is fully achieved. Each chiropractor is different, so be sure to ask your chiropractor any questions if you are unsure about a procedure or treatment. You and your doctor will discuss a personalized treatment plan, which centers around your adjustment in order to relieve you of your symptoms.
After your adjustment and initial appointment, you may feel immediate improvement. Most, however, will experience relief of their symptoms gradually. Adjustments restore motion to joints that were previously locked. Therefore ligaments and tendons will begin to stretch back to their normal length. This may cause muscle soreness similar to soreness brought on by intense exercise, though this should resolve itself within 24-48 hours. Experiencing these sensations is normal and within days you will likely be experiencing increased range of motion and less pain. Be sure to following the plan that you and your doctor discuss.
