For many CrossFit athletes, from Novice, Intermediate or CrossFit Games Legend Chris Spealler, aches, pains and injuries will occur as a part of their training.

In general, there seem to be five main areas that CrossFit athletes have a tendency to injure: lower back, knees, wrists, shoulders and elbows. Dr. Atousa Bahadori, Chiropractor in Richardson, TX (just north of Dallas) can treat CrossFit athletes suffering from various types of injuries.

  1. Shoulder Entrapment syndrome
  2. Disc Disorder (Neck and Back)
  3. Sprain Strain (Neck, Shoulder, Lower Back)
  4. Piriformis Syndrome
  5. Sciatia

1) Lower Back

An injury to the lower back should come as no surprise to most CrossFit athletes. When you are lifting such heavy weights, all it takes is one lift with bad form and weak abdominal muscles to feel pain. Lower back pain should not be ignored.

2) Knees

The knee is one of the largest joints in our bodies. Because of this, we are highly dependent on its functionality. All it takes is a knee injury to reinforce this dependence! Our knees are made up of bones, ligaments, tendons, cartilage, muscles, joints, arteries, veins…the list goes on and on. It is able to support up to 8 times our body weight. Even if you are a small person that’s a lot of pressure on such a small part of your body!

Physiotherapy and Chiropractic treatment can resolve injuries and issues in the knee.

3) Wrists
The wrist is an area of the body that is often overlooked by most athletes. In the age of technology, however, taking care of the wrist could not be more important.

The root causes of wrist injury are mobility and flexibility. CrossFit athletes push themselves hard, sometimes lifting too much too soon and can result in wrist injuries because the wrist is not flexible and strong enough to take the weight.

4) Shoulders

Entrapment syndrome

“Impingement syndrome is pain and often weakness when you raise your arm, caused by a muscle tendon ‘catching’ in your shoulder. It involves the rotator cuff tendon – a tough, rubbery cord that connects your shoulder blade to your arm bone.”

A regular reoccurring injury among CrossFit athletes are shoulder injuries.

It’s not uncommon to see athletes walking through the gym, rotating one shoulder and vigorously massaging the muscles with the other hand. It often starts as a weakness or a tweak that creeps up when doing overhead lifts or an extended amount of pull-ups that the weakness and fatigue will appear. Shoulder injuries are serious and require attention before they get require surgery!

5) Elbows
Of all the most common CrossFit injuries, perhaps the one that might surprise someone is an elbow injury. For most CrossFit athletes, elbow pains appear when you are in the front rack position, preparing for a lift such as front squats, power cleans or full cleans. Most often, elbow damage can from improper positioning of the bar as well as over tension.
Resting is important, Proper technique is important. And treatment of injuries is important.

With all of this risk of injury, it might seem that CrossFit has a greater tendency for harm than other forms of exercise or sport. Athletes can suffer from tennis elbow, shin splints, and wrist injuries, should and neck pain, sprains and strains and even develop tendonitis.

While all of these injuries can be prevented, there is no 100% foolproof training plan that guarantees health and safety. All athletes must exercise caution.

The body’s ability to heal itself depends on a healthy nervous system. Events such as auto accidents, sports injuries, and repetitive stress to the back can hinder the body’s natural ability to adapt. The joints of the spine “lock up” when these events happen, limiting range of motion. Spinal joint restriction and/or misalignment irritates and puts more pressure on the spinal nerve, which can show up as back pain or neck pain.

How many Billions of Dollars did Americans spend treating lower back pain?

The lower back is the region that connects the upper body to the lower body. Since it supports the majority of the body’s weight, lower back pain is a lot more common than you might think. It is not that difficult to hurt yourself by lifting a heavy object or reaching for something. In fact, the majority of people will experience some form of lower back pain at some point in their lives. Americans spend almost $50 billion each year to treat lower back pain, which is the most common cause of missed work days and job related injury or stress.

There are many causes of lower back pain, which include, but are not limited to:

  • Overuse, strain, or injury
  • Aging
  • Herniated disc
  • Arthritis
  • Compression fractures
  • Illness
  • Spinal problems you were born with

Acute back pain tends to fade within a few weeks. However, if left untreated, lower back pain can become chronic, especially if you are under a lot of stress or undergoing depression.

Depending on the cause of pain, symptoms can vary from:

  • Dull pain
  • Sharp pain
  • Pain occurs over a small area
  • Pain occurs over a wide area
  •  Muscle spasms
  •  Leg symptoms (pain, numbness, tingling)

Walking and rest are perhaps the simplest treatments for lower back pain. However, if your pain persists for a few weeks, further treatment (such as massage, spinal manipulation, and muscle strengthening exercises), may be needed.

Chiropractic treatment is a very effective way to treat lower back pain. Chiropractors will use hands-on spinal manipulation, aligning the body’s musculoskeletal structure so the body can heal itself. Applying heat or cold may also be used to alleviate any pain felt as a result of the lower back pain.

  • Practice good posture
  • Stretching and low impact exercise, such as walking, swimming, or riding a stationary bike
  • Wearing low heeled shoes
  • Sleeping on your side
  • If you sit for long periods at work, make sure your chair has good back support and take regular breaks to walk around
  • If you lift heavy things for work, talk to your human resources department to see there are other ways to do your work.
  • Do not depend on a lifting belt to protect your back.
